Another illustration on the pastimes of Garuḍa from the Mahābhārata.
As described in the Ādi Parva, Āstīka Parva, section 24 of the Mahābhārata, after Garuḍa had decided to fetch nectar from heaven to save his mother Vinatā from servitorship to her co-wive Kadrū and her sons the snakes, Garuḍa needed a good meal to appease his hunger. He had already eaten a host of niṣādas on the instruction of his mother, but was still feeling hungry.

He then happened to meet his father Kaśyapa who was engaged in performing austerities on the mountains of Gandhamādana. After respecting his father and being inquired of his welfare, Garuḍa complained about his hunger.

Sage Kaśyapa then instructed his son to catch a huge elephant and turtle from the nearby mountain lake, who had formerly been two foolish and greedy brothers and had cursed each other to become animals.

Afterwards Kaśapa conferred all of his blessings upon his son Garuḍa in order that he might be able to defeat all the demigods in battle and obtain their nectar.
